Cottar’s Camp, Kenya

cottar's camp 22nd October, 1989

Kenya became our base for four months.

It is a country of astounding natural beauty.  We travelled far and wide, resuscitating childhood memories in Nakuru, Maasai Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo.  It is impossible to tire of the spectacular horizons: yellowing savannahs teeming with wildlife; snow-capped mountains and awe-inspiring volcanoes; lakes shimmering pink with flamingos. In close-up, the kaleidoscope necklaces of the Maasai; the toothy yawn of a lioness; the tip-toed elegance of the gerenuk; the gaudiness of the Superb starling; the silhouette of a thorn tree against the setting sun.

One day, we set off overland to Tanzania in an old VW Kombi Camper we had bought for general transport. The road to Namanga passes through unspoilt scenery, thick with thorn trees and sudden rocky outcrops where the Maasai graze their cattle in harmony with herds of zebra, impala, Thompson’s gazelles and giraffe, all visible from the roadside.  As a child, we rarely went anywhere beyond Nairobi without seeing wildlife roaming freely by the roadside. My sisters and I would compete to see who spotted what animals first.  I was pleased to see that, though to a lesser extent, this was still possible in modern Kenya.
