Then, at 30 nautical miles, the island looms pale-green and unimaginably lovely in the evening sunshine. GPS has brought us in spot on target. The houses of Hanga Roa, the only town, are tucked in gardens under trees. It could be a shanty town for all I care, to me it looks the most friendly, homely place on earth.
One night, we took a picnic to Rano Raraku and dined there, amongst the moai, under a brilliant round moon. It was breath-takingly romantic. We felt cosy on that chunky isolated island. Surrounded by the silver sea, on which the yellow moon painted a shaky golden path, we brooded beside the mysterious statues of a lost civilisation and felt pangs of regret that our journey was ending.
