Familiar landmarks flashed by… Mighty Pedra da Gávea and the twin peaks of Dois Irmãos, with the picturesque confusion of the favelas of Rocinha and Vidigal scrambling up the sides. The white curve of Leblon and Ipanema beaches, and the backdrop of the majestic forest-clad mountains of Tijuca mirrored in the Lagoa.
Then, the perfect half-moon of sand before Copacabana’s wall of edifices and just beyond, the Sugar Loaf standing sentinel at the entrance to Guanabara Bay. When we passed it, there was the statue of Christ, arms opened wide in welcome, looking down from Corcovado onto yacht-spangled Botafogo Bay. No city on earth excels the natural beauty of Rio de Janeiro.
